The biggest comparison mistake: treating subjective “energy” descriptions as clinical evidence

The older version of this page described yerba mate as producing “social energy,” motivation, and a rounded stimulant effect, while green tea was described as producing gradually absorbed caffeine and reliably calmer focus.

Those are attractive narratives, but they are not established comparative outcomes.

Both drinks contain caffeine. Green tea also contains L-theanine, catechins, and other tea constituents; yerba mate contains methylxanthines, chlorogenic acids, saponins, and other phytochemicals. Chemical differences can justify research hypotheses. They do not establish that one beverage reliably feels smoother, more social, more motivating, or less anxious in every person.

A direct comparison would need controlled servings with measured composition, blinded or otherwise carefully standardized exposure, and the same cognitive/mood outcomes. That evidence base is not currently strong enough to support a universal experiential ranking.


Green tea: the strongest “focus” evidence is really tea-constituent evidence

A 2025 systematic review/meta-analysis examined randomized trials of tea, L-theanine, and L-theanine plus caffeine in healthy participants. Fifty RCTs were included in the review; 15 contributed to at least one meta-analysis. Some short-term attention and mood outcomes favored theanine plus caffeine, but confidence intervals often showed substantial uncertainty, and the authors explicitly called for more research using actual tea beverages or tea-equivalent bioactive exposures. [4]

A broader 2026 L-theanine meta-analysis included 31 randomized trials / 1,168 participants. It found a choice-reaction-time signal after single-dose L-theanine and a modest acute-stress effect that was heavily influenced by studies at high risk of bias. [5]

What that does—and does not—mean for a cup of green tea

It supports saying:

  • green tea naturally contains theanine and caffeine;
  • those constituents have randomized human cognition research;
  • selected attention outcomes can move under controlled conditions.

It does not support saying:

  • one cup of green tea reproduces a standardized L-theanine+caffeine trial;
  • green tea always causes “calm focus”;
  • its caffeine is inherently absorbed more gradually than mate caffeine;
  • everyone who is anxiety-prone will tolerate green tea better.

The beverage, the purified constituent, and a fixed-dose supplement combination are related exposures—not interchangeable ones.


Yerba mate: the newer human evidence is more metabolic than cognitive

A 2025 systematic review/meta-analysis included 13 randomized controlled trials of yerba mate across populations including people with dyslipidemia, overweight/obesity, normal weight, and prediabetes. [1]

The most favorable pooled findings were in small prediabetes datasets, where post-meal glucose, HbA1c, and HOMA-related measures improved. The review found no significant pooled effect on triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C, fasting glucose, fasting insulin, waist circumference, or BMI. Reported adverse events across studies included gastrointestinal discomfort, insomnia, tachycardia, headache, mucosal irritation, and other symptoms. [1]

That is much more informative than saying mate “supports metabolism.” The evidence appears endpoint- and population-specific, and much of the literature remains small.

A 2023 systematic review reached generally favorable conclusions across physiological outcomes but also found the evidence base methodologically weak: 22 of 32 included studies were rated high risk of bias, nine moderate, and only one low risk; GRADE certainty ranged from moderate to very low. [2]

A newer randomized crossover trial in nonhabitual consumers adds useful human cardiometabolic data, but one controlled trial does not transform mate into a general treatment for blood sugar, cholesterol, obesity, or cardiovascular disease. [3]


Caffeine: preparation matters more than a memorized comparison chart

Caffeine content in brewed plant beverages is not a fixed property of the species alone. It changes with:

  • dry-leaf amount;
  • leaf/stem composition;
  • tea cultivar or mate product;
  • water volume;
  • steeping or infusion time;
  • temperature;
  • repeated mate infusions;
  • serving size.

That is especially important for traditional mate, where the same leaf mass may be infused repeatedly. Comparing “one 8-ounce cup” of tea with “one gourd” of mate can be chemically misleading because the consumption patterns are different.

Practical evidence rule: if caffeine exposure matters—for sleep, pregnancy, anxiety, cardiovascular symptoms, or medication context—the product label or measured serving is more useful than an internet-wide generic range.


Very-hot mate and esophageal cancer: temperature is the key distinction

This topic is often summarized incorrectly as “yerba mate causes cancer.”

IARC re-evaluated mate together with coffee and very-hot beverages. The agency concluded that drinking very-hot beverages is probably carcinogenic to humans (Group 2A). Mate that was not very hot was not classifiable as to carcinogenicity. IARC’s analysis found esophageal-cancer risk increased with drinking temperature independent of the amount of mate consumed; warm mate was not associated with the same statistically significant increase in the cited combined analysis. [6]

The relevant lesson is broader than mate:

Repeated exposure of the esophagus to very-hot beverages is the concern. The evidence does not justify describing normally warm or cold mate itself as a proven carcinogen.

IARC used approximately 65°C and above as the “very hot” exposure category in this evaluation. [6]


Green tea beverage vs green-tea extract: do not merge the safety profiles

Brewed green tea and concentrated green-tea extract (GTE) are not equivalent exposures.

LiverTox identifies green-tea extract as a well-established cause of rare clinically apparent liver injury, with more than 100 cases described in the literature it reviewed. Ordinary green-tea drinking has a much more reassuring history, although rare infusion-associated reports have also appeared. [7]

The USP systematic safety review likewise found substantial variability among extract products and case reports of hepatotoxicity across a wide range of EGCG exposures, with fasting potentially increasing catechin bioavailability and risk. [8]

This means a comparison article about brewed green tea should not borrow the risk profile of concentrated weight-loss extracts—and an extract product should not borrow the safety reputation of a normal cup of tea.


Antioxidant and polyphenol claims: chemistry is not a clinical winner

Green tea is rich in catechins such as EGCG. Yerba mate contains chlorogenic acids and other polyphenols. Both can produce impressive laboratory antioxidant measurements.

That does not establish that one beverage delivers “more antioxidants” in a way that translates into better health outcomes. ORAC-style or test-tube antioxidant rankings do not directly measure disease prevention, cognition, longevity, or metabolic benefit in humans.

The better evidence hierarchy is:

  1. randomized human clinical outcome;
  2. validated human biomarker with clear relevance;
  3. pharmacokinetic evidence;
  4. mechanistic/cell/animal evidence;
  5. laboratory antioxidant capacity.

A comparison should not jump from level 5 to level 1.


Which one is “better”?

If the question is short-term attention

Green tea has the stronger mechanistic and randomized constituent evidence because L-theanine+caffeine has been directly studied in controlled cognition paradigms. Even here, effect sizes are task-specific and beverage-level evidence is less direct. [4,5]

If the question is glycemic/metabolic research

Yerba mate has a newer dedicated RCT meta-analysis, with selected favorable glycemic findings but many null lipid/weight outcomes. [1]

If the question is lower caffeine

There is no species-level guarantee. Compare the actual preparation and serving.

If the question is safety

  • Avoid routinely drinking either beverage at very-hot temperatures. [6]
  • Do not equate brewed green tea with concentrated green-tea extract. [7,8]
  • Caffeine sensitivity and total daily exposure matter for both.

If the question is taste, culture, or ritual

That is a preference question, not an evidence hierarchy. Traditional mate culture and tea traditions are valuable without needing to be converted into physiological claims.


Claims this page intentionally does not make

The evidence does not support confidently claiming that:

  • mate provides a special “social energy” state;
  • green tea caffeine is inherently slower or smoother;
  • mate is better for workouts or motivation;
  • green tea is automatically better for anxious people;
  • either drink “balances blood sugar” in healthy people;
  • mate saponins reliably improve digestion in humans;
  • alternating the beverages prevents caffeine tolerance;
  • combining either drink with adaptogens produces a validated stack;
  • either beverage requires extra salt/electrolytes because it is a mild diuretic.

Those claims may sound plausible, but plausibility is not the same as direct evidence.

Yerba mate and green tea are both caffeinated botanical beverages with interesting but different human evidence bases.

Green tea has the cleaner research path for theanine/caffeine and selected attention outcomes. Yerba mate has newer RCT-level synthesis around metabolic outcomes, with some glycemic signals and many null findings. Neither beverage has won a comprehensive head-to-head clinical contest.

The most important safety corrections are equally specific: very-hot beverage temperature is the established esophageal-cancer hazard, not normally warm mate as a proven carcinogen; and concentrated green-tea extract carries a liver-injury signal that should not be casually applied to ordinary brewed tea.
