Premium vs Drugstore Omega-3: Price Is Not a Quality Test

The survey problem
Why one scary fish-oil study should not define the entire market
Quality surveys have produced very different results. A 2015 New Zealand survey reported major label-content and oxidation problems and concluded cost, country of origin, and exclusivity were poor markers [13]. A later collaborative New Zealand analysis found 91% of tested products complied with EPA/DHA content claims and 77% met the cited TOTOX limit [12]. A French analysis of 20 unflavored products found all samples within GOED oxidation thresholds and almost complete label compliance [11].
A U.S. multi-year analysis of 72 marine and microalgal products sampled from 2014–2020 again found substantial oxidation variability: 68% of flavored products versus 13% of unflavored products exceeded the study’s TOTOX benchmark [10]. These studies do not justify “the market is fine” or “all OTC fish oil is rancid.” They show that quality is batch-, formulation-, storage-, and market-specific.
Label literacy
“1000 mg fish oil” is usually not 1000 mg EPA + DHA
A 2023 U.S. label study identified 2,819 fish-oil supplements; nearly three quarters made at least one health claim, and EPA/DHA doses varied substantially among leading brands [14]. Oxidation
Ask for data, not tasting notes
Long-chain omega-3 fats are oxidation-prone. Peroxide value measures primary oxidation; p-anisidine value captures important secondary products; TOTOX combines the two [7,8]. Flavoring can complicate sensory judgment and may affect analytical interpretation, which is another reason “it smells fishy” is not a laboratory test. Where a manufacturer publishes recent batch-specific testing, check the actual values and laboratory rather than relying only on a marketing phrase such as “molecularly distilled.”
The clinical significance of consuming mildly oxidized omega-3 supplements is less certain than the chemistry of oxidation itself [7]. The appropriate editorial claim is “oxidation is a measurable quality attribute,” not “any capsule above a voluntary limit is known to cause disease.”
