Why the famous 84-minute result needs context

The most eye-catching tart-cherry sleep result comes from a 2018 randomized crossover pilot in adults older than 50 with insomnia. Participants consumed 240 mL of tart cherry juice twice daily for two weeks. After exclusions, only eight people completed the study. In those eight completers, polysomnography showed an increase in sleep time of 84 minutes during the tart-cherry condition.[2]

That is interesting because polysomnography is an objective sleep measure. It is also far too small a study to justify telling the average reader that tart cherry adds an hour or more of sleep. Tiny crossover trials are vulnerable to unstable effect estimates, and the enrolled population was narrow.

An earlier 2010 pilot in 15 older adults with chronic insomnia also found some improvement. Compared with placebo, tart cherry reduced minutes awake after sleep onset and improved insomnia severity, but it did not significantly improve sleep latency, total sleep time, or sleep efficiency versus placebo.[3]

Together, these pilots justify more research. They do not establish a dependable clinical effect size.

What about melatonin?

A 2012 randomized crossover study in 20 healthy adults found that tart cherry concentrate increased urinary melatonin metabolite output and was accompanied by improvements in several actigraphy-derived sleep measures.[4]

This is often presented as the mechanism for tart cherry's sleep effects. It is a reasonable hypothesis, but it should not become a shortcut around outcome data. A food can alter a biomarker without producing a reliable real-world sleep benefit across populations.

The newer literature reinforces that point. A 2024 randomized crossover study in adults with overweight or obesity and sleep problems found no significant effect of 500 mg Montmorency tart-cherry powder on the measured sleep or inflammatory outcomes.[5] Another controlled trial in healthy adults likewise reported no meaningful sleep benefit from tart-cherry juice or powder supplementation.[6]

So “contains melatonin” and “improves sleep” are not interchangeable claims.

Juice versus powder is a real evidence problem

Most of the positive early studies used juice or concentrate. That does not prove that a small capsule of tart-cherry powder produces the same exposure to melatonin, anthocyanins, procyanidins, sugars, acids, or other bioactive compounds.

This is a common supplement-research trap: a successful study of one preparation becomes marketing support for every preparation carrying the same ingredient name. The 2024 null powder trial is a useful warning against that leap.
